Spiffy’s Car Wash FAQ’s: I wash my vehicle at home using a garden hose. Is that okay?

Answer: Nothing wrong with an occasional DIY car wash! But, to be clear: washing your vehicle at home may actually be very harmful to the finish if you are not using adequate tools and supplies.

A study performed by the University of Texas showed that just a single home hand-wash could leave scratches in your finish as deep as 1/10 of the paint’s total thickness. Additionally, an average garden hose cannot distribute adequate water pressure with the detergent action to avoid damaging a vehicle’s finish. Many people wash their cars using an abrasive towel or a sponge that collects damaging particles. The UT study concluded that vehicle owners should avoid washing their vehicle at home.
