Answer: Washing your car or truck at home can be very harmful to the finish.

A study performed by the University of Texas showed that just a single home hand-wash could leave scratches in your finish as deep as 1/10 of the paint’s total thickness. Additionally, the good ol’ average garden hose cannot distribute adequate water pressure with the detergent action to avoid damaging a vehicle’s finish. Many people wash their cars using an abrasive towel or a sponge that collects damaging particles. The UT study concluded that vehicle owners should avoid washing their vehicle at home.
